Here is why our region is so hard on gutters, what it costs to keep up, and when it makes more sense to stop cleaning and fix the problem for good.
Why does Western PA leaf drop clog gutters so badly?
It is the mix of trees. Our hillsides are heavy with red and sugar maple, which drop early and fast, usually in the second and third weeks of October. Then come the oaks, which hang on until November and shed big, leathery leaves that do not break down. Add pine needles, helicopter seeds from the maples in spring, and shingle granules washing off an older roof, and you get a dense mat that holds water like a sponge.
That mat does two things. It blocks the downspout outlet, so water pools the length of the gutter and spills over the front edge. And it stays wet for weeks, which keeps the gutter, the fascia board behind it, and the bottom course of shingles damp through the freeze thaw cycles of November and December.
What happens when gutters stay clogged into winter?
Fascia rot comes first. The fascia is the wood board the gutter hangs on. When water sits in a full gutter and wicks back over the lip, that board stays wet. Give it two or three falls and it goes soft. Now the gutter hangers pull loose, the gutter sags, and the whole thing has to come down to replace the wood. A fascia repair on one side of a house runs $300 to $900 before the gutter goes back up.
Ice dams come next. A gutter full of frozen leaf mush is a block of ice at the edge of the roof. Snow melt from the warm upper roof hits it, backs up, and works under the shingles. That water ends up in the soffit, the wall, or the ceiling below. In our Westmoreland County jobs, roughly half the ice dam leaks we trace back start at a clogged gutter rather than a roof defect.
Foundation water is the slow one. Water that overflows the gutter drops straight down along the foundation instead of running to the downspout and away from the house. Over a wet fall that is thousands of gallons landing in the same two foot strip of soil. Basements in Norwin, Greensburg, and Monroeville that “never used to leak” often start after a couple of seasons of overflowing gutters. When should you clean gutters in the fall in Pittsburgh?
Twice. The first cleaning should come in mid October, after the maples have mostly finished. If you do it in September, you are cleaning gutters that will be full again in three weeks. The second cleaning should come in late November, after the oaks let go and before the first sustained freeze locks everything in place. That second cleaning is the one most people skip, and it is the one that prevents ice dams.

For a typical 2,000 square foot colonial with about 160 feet of gutter, that puts two fall cleanings at roughly $400 to $700 per year. Do that for ten years and you have spent the price of a full gutter guard system, without the guards.
When do gutter guards make more sense than cleaning?
The math flips when you have heavy tree cover, a two story house, or a roof you do not want anyone climbing twice a year. A quality guard system on that same colonial runs $1,500 to $4,000 installed. If you are paying $500 a year for cleaning, the guards pay for themselves in three to eight years and you stop worrying about November.
Not every guard is equal. Cheap foam inserts and plastic screens clog with maple seeds and pine needles within a season or two. When should you replace gutters instead of cleaning them?
Sometimes cleaning is not the problem. If your gutters are sectional, meaning they have seams every ten feet, those seams are where leaks start no matter how clean they are. If they are pulling away from the house, sagging in the middle, or rusted through at the corners, cleaning is putting off the inevitable.
