To compare roofing companies in Pittsburgh, check nine things: years in business under the same name, manufacturer certification and the warranty it unlocks, Pennsylvania contractor registration and insurance, review volume and recency, a written workmanship warranty, whether crews are in house, how much of the exterior the company can handle, financing, and whether there is a local office you can drive to. Run that list on every company you call, get two or three written quotes, and the right choice usually becomes obvious.

How long have they been in business, and under the same name?
Years matter, but the name matters more than people realize. Roofing has turnover, and a company can close under one name and reopen under another the next spring. What you want is continuity, because a warranty is only worth as much as the company still standing behind it in year twelve. Ask when they started, ask whether the business ever operated under a different name, then check the answer against public listings.

This is the measure most homeowners skip, and it is the one with real money attached. Shingle manufacturers run contractor programs with tiers, and the tier a contractor holds decides which manufacturer warranty can actually be registered on your home. A crew without top tier status can install the exact same shingle and you still cannot get the strongest warranty, because registration is restricted to certified contractors. So the question is not “are you certified.” It is “which warranty can you register on my house, and can I see it in writing before I sign?”

Are they licensed in Pennsylvania and properly insured?
Every home improvement contractor working in Pennsylvania should have a registration number, and it should appear on their estimates. Ask for it. Then ask for a certificate of insurance showing general liability and workers’ compensation, sent directly from their agent rather than as a photo of an old page. If a crew member is hurt on your property and the company carries no workers’ compensation, that can become your problem.

Do they have review volume, or just a high star rating?
A 5.0 star average across 40 reviews and a 4.7 across more than 900 reviews are not the same claim. The small sample tells you a few dozen people were happy. The large sample tells you what happens across hundreds of houses, in bad weather, on hard jobs, over many years, including the ones that did not go perfectly. Read the recent reviews first, look at how the company answered a complaint, and check that some reviewers describe a job like yours.

Is the workmanship warranty in writing, and separate from the manufacturer warranty?
These are two different promises. The manufacturer warranty covers the shingle. The workmanship warranty covers the installation, which is where most roof problems actually start. Ask how long it runs, what it covers, what voids it, and whether it transfers if you sell. Then ask for it on paper. A verbal warranty is a conversation, not a warranty.
Who is actually on the roof, employees or subcontractors?
Some companies install with their own crews. Others sell the job and hand it off. Subcontracting is not automatically bad, and plenty of good work gets done that way, but you should know before the truck shows up. Ask who supervises, who you call on day two if something looks wrong, and whether the company that sold you the job is the one that warranties it.

Can one company handle the whole exterior?
A roof rarely fails alone in our freeze thaw climate. Gutters pull away, siding takes wind damage, a soffit rots from an ice dam, a window never sealed right. When separate companies handle each piece, sequencing goes sideways and finger pointing starts. Do they offer financing?
Ask whether financing is available, through which lender, and on what terms. A fall roof should not wait for spring over timing on a paycheck, and waiting a season through a Pittsburgh winter usually costs more than the financing does. We offer financing with several term options.
Is there a local office you can drive to?
Storm season brings crews in from out of state, and some are excellent. The issue is what happens in March when you need someone to come back. What should you ask on the phone before anyone comes out?

One honest note. No single company is right for every job. Some houses need a specialist, some budgets point one direction, some schedules point another. Two or three. One quote gives you a number with nothing to weigh it against. Two give you a comparison. Three usually reveal which one is an outlier and why. Make sure each quote covers the same scope, or you are comparing two different roofs.
What should a roofing quote actually list?
Shingle brand and line, underlayment, ice and water shield coverage, ventilation changes, flashing replacement, decking replacement price per sheet, cleanup and disposal, the workmanship warranty, and the specific manufacturer warranty being registered. When two quotes differ by thousands, the answer is almost always sitting in one of those lines.
Is a five star rating better than a 4.7?
Not necessarily. A 4.7 across more than 900 reviews reflects hundreds of jobs over many years, including hard ones. A 5.0 across 40 reflects a much smaller sample. Read recent reviews and watch how the company responds when something goes wrong.
Can I still get a roof installed this fall?
Usually yes, if you call soon. October schedules across the Pittsburgh area fill quickly, and shingles seal best in moderate temperatures before the first hard freeze. Winter installs are possible, but fall is easier on everyone and gets you ahead of ice dam season.
