August 10, 2025

If replacing your windows has been on your to-do list, 2025 might be the best—and last—year to get it done while saving money through the federal tax credit for energy-efficient upgrades.

The Energy-Efficient Home Improvement Credit, part of the Inflation Reduction Act, gives homeowners a tax break for qualifying home upgrades—including energy-efficient replacement windows. But here’s the catch: the clock is ticking, and this credit is currently scheduled to expire after December 31, 2025.

So if you’re considering new windows, now is the time to act.

What Is the 2025 Energy-Efficient Windows Tax Credit?

Under current guidelines from the IRS, homeowners can receive a tax credit of up to $600 for installing qualifying energy-efficient windows in their primary residence. This is part of the Section 25C Energy-Efficient Home Improvement Credit and includes:

  • Up to $600 for ENERGY STAR-certified windows

  • An annual limit of $1,200 total for all qualifying home energy improvements (windows, insulation, doors, etc.)

The windows must meet specific performance standards related to U-factor and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC)—all aimed at reducing heat loss, improving comfort, and lowering utility bills.

Why Replace Your Windows Now?

Aside from the federal tax credit, there are several reasons to consider window replacement in 2025:

1. Save on Energy Bills

Energy-efficient windows help reduce drafts, block heat transfer, and keep your home more comfortable year-round. That means your HVAC system runs less—and your bills go down.

2. Increase Your Home’s Value and Curb Appeal

New windows boost both aesthetics and resale value. Today’s homeowners and buyers are looking for homes with low-maintenance, high-performance windows.

3. Avoid Missing the Tax Credit Deadline

This credit is only available for windows installed by December 31, 2025. If you wait until next year, you may miss the chance to save up to $600 through the federal program.

4. Installation Slots Will Fill Up

As the deadline approaches, more homeowners will be scheduling their projects to lock in the savings. Don’t wait until fall or winter—schedule now to get ahead of the rush.

Do My Windows Qualify?

To claim the tax credit, windows must meet the following:

  • Be ENERGY STAR-certified

  • Be installed in your primary residence

  • Be new windows (not used or refurbished)

  • Be replacements for existing windows (not part of a new addition)

At Bella Construction, we offer high-quality, energy-efficient replacement windows that meet or exceed federal standards—so your investment is not only beautiful, but smart and tax-advantaged.

How to Claim the Tax Credit

After installation is complete, you’ll need to:

  • Keep receipts for the total cost of materials (labor is not included in the credit)

  • Request documentation from your contractor that the windows meet federal efficiency standards

  • File IRS Form 5695 when you do your taxes

  • Claim the credit on your 2025 tax return
